Starbucks will open its first Roastery and Reserve Tasting Room next year in Shanghai, standing twice as large as the Seattle original, which opened in 2014. The coffee giant plans to open another roastery in New York City in 2018.
“The Starbucks Roastery environment honors coffee innovation as a modern day Willy Wonka experience, where customers are only feet away from the theatre and artistry of our coffee craft,” Starbucks Chariman and CEO Howard Schultz said in a statement. At these specialty stores, customers can purchase limited availability and/or single-origin coffees, many of which are roasted on-site.
The 30,000-square-foot Shanghai roastery will be located in a mixed-development shopping destination called HKRI Taikoo Hui Project, according Starbucks.
Starbucks currently has 2,100 locations throughout China.
