In the wake of the pandemic and the trend of office workers being home or enjoying a hybrid work environment, the decline of lunch traffic was a big topic of conversation in urban centers. It also led many to speculate that the suburbs would see a restaurant boom.

According to 44% of rd+d readers surveyed, suburban sites are where they are seeing the most emphasis currently, Another 31% said their focus was on urban sites. The remaining 25% said they it depends on the client or that they were doing a mix of both.

rd+d’s ongoing research project periodically surveys qualified subscribers on the state of restaurant development and design. This survey was fielded in June 2022.
