The 8th annual International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Global Excellence Awards had two winners in the Restaurants, Lounges and Bars category, both in China.

Setsugekka Japanese Cuisine in Changchun was recognized in the Restaurants, Lounges and Bars category and the project’s design firm, Shanghai Hip-Pop Architectural Decoration Design Co., Ltd., was awarded Best in Competition for the design.

“The collection of superlative international design projects submitted this year provided a great deal of competition for the Best in Competition Global Excellence Award selection. However, Shanghai Hip-Pop Architectural Decoration Design Co., Ltd., stood out among the rest,” says IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP. “The representation of the various seasons and extensive layering throughout the space made this project simply unforgettable.”

Anti-Domino No. 02 – Wood Mountain, in Chongqing, China, designed by Daipu Architects of Beijing, was also named a winner in the Restaurant, Lounges and Bars category.

Projects were reviewed by a panel of design professionals, including Malcolm Berg, IIDA, president and design director, EoA, Inc.; Stephanie Cardinal, president, humà design + architecture; Danielle Fox, principal designer, Rodrigo Vargas Design; Johannes Lampela, director of design, Designworks LA, a BMW Group Company; and Geno Yun, AIA, LEED AP, principal, ELS Architecture and Urban Design.

In designing the unusual space, the Hip-Pop Architectural Decoration Design Co., Ltd. team considered the concept of “the right time to eat” as well as a quote from Tokyo-based Chef Hirohisa Koyama: “You have to prepare for the snapper when you feel the chills in your heart.”

The design incorporates a distant view of the Yangtze River and the unique skyline of the Yuzhong Peninsula, responding to and respecting the local topography, landscape and climate of the region.
