Same-store sales growth was down 1 percent in June and down 1 percent for the second quarter of 2017, according to TDn2K’s Restaurant Industry Snapshot, which is based on weekly sales from more than 28,500 restaurant units and more than 155 brands.
Same-store sales have been declining for the last six consecutive quarters, according TDn2K.
Traffic declined by 3.1 percent for the second quarter compared to the same period in 2016, but it was up .6 percent compared to the first quarter of 2017.
The report also notes that June’s numbers were the best for the industry in both sales and traffic growth since January, and the second quarter of 2017 posted the best results since the second quarter of 2016.
Check averages grew 2.2 percent in the second quarter of 2017. It was a year-over-year increase of 2.2 percent.
Affluent Customers Continue to Spend
Fine dining was the best performing segment based on same-store sales growth in the second quarter, followed by upscale casual, according to TDn2K. They were the only two segments with positive sales. The growth of these affluent segments came mostly through increased check averages, and not through increased visits.
The report’s weakest segments based on second quarter results were fast casual and the bar and grill sub-segment within casual dining.
