Restroom design represents an often overlooked area of restaurant design. A majority — 57% — of rd+d readers surveyed in August said they are reemphasizing their focus on cleanliness and privacy in the wake of the pandemic.

Another 24% of readers surveyed said that they continue to stick to the minimum requirements because restrooms do not drive revenue. Finally, 12% said that they are creating restrooms that have strong design elements to encourage guests to take selfies and linger.

The remaining 7% said they were focusing on “other” aspects of restroom design, including incorporating gender-neutral bathrooms.

rd+d’s ongoing research project periodically surveys qualified subscribers on the state of restaurant development and design. This survey was fielded in early August 2022.
