Back Yard Burgers, the Nashville-based, Black Angus burger concept founded in 1987, unveiled a new, contemporary redesign of its restaurants and expansion plans.

Ty Neal, his brother Mark, and partners Drew Kim and Perry Smith, who left the company in 2012, opened the first Matchbox restaurant on H Street in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown district in 2003. They rehabbed an old building themselves, transforming it into what would end up being the prototype for a casual-dining brand with staying power and growth potential.

Local Harlem resident and mixologist Karl Franz Williams and business partner Julie Grunberger opened Solomon & Kuff, a pan-Caribbean gastropub and rum bar in West Harlem’s Manhattanville Factory District.

Chipotle opened its first Chicago area ShopHouse SouthEast Asian Kitchen locations in December, with one store opening amidst office buildings in the Loop and the other opening in suburban Schaumburg near Woodfield Mall.

In partnership with ESquared Hospitality, The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba opened a new BLT Steak restaurant as a second outpost in the Caribbean next to San Juan. There are more than 20 BLT Steak locations around the world including Hong Kong, Tokyo and the flagship location in New York City, which opened in 2004.

Taco Bell physically relocated its first-ever store in Downey, Calif., to the company’s headquarters in Irvine in order to save the 53-year-old, 400-square-foot taco stand with walk-up windows.

Zoom Pizza Factory joined the growing fast-casual pizza segment with its first store location opening in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.
