Founded in 1987 by David Quintanilla and his family, Serranos Cocina y Cantina has been an Austin, Texas, staple for years, growing to four locations.
The independent, family-owned restaurant knew it was time for a modern interior update while maintaining Serranos' appeal. Their goal? A welcoming, down-to-earth feel that imparts a sense of community and family tradition.
Mark Odom Studio was tapped to renovate the 20-year-old Lakeline Austin location, which will set the tone for updates to other locations.
The modern design breathes new life into the space while keeping Serranos' “everyone is welcome at the table” brand identity.
The scope of work included a front-of-house renovation in addition to an exterior and patio refresh. The result is a modern cantina that incorporates vibrant hues, elevated craftsmanship and soft, warm textures.
Guests are welcomed via large hand-crafted hacienda-style doors. A rolling pin wall pays homage to the story of Serranos' family-owned legacy (and handmade tortillas.) A large woven tapestry created by artist Lisandra Ramos of Metgal Art, is centered in the main dining room and acts as a separation of the dining spaces, flanked by new wood banquette seating and colorful hand-painted murals by local artists.
