Crooked Run Fermentation recently opened the brand's third location near Gallaudet University, a private federally chartered university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing.
The brewery, whose original location was in Sterling, Va., recently opened the brand's third location in the Union Market District of Washington DC.
For this latest opening, Crooked Run turned to GTM Architects to design the project.
GTM developed a modern look for this location. The brewery and restaurant is located near Gallaudet University, a private federally chartered university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. In 2005, Hansel Bauman established the DeafSpace Project with the ASL Deaf Studies Department at Gallaudet University. The team incorporated principles outlined in the DeafSpace Design Guidelines into the overall concept for Crooked Run DC's dining room and bar.
The guidelines recommend furniture and wall colors, such as muted blue and green, that provide contrast to all skin tones to minimize eye fatigue and make it easier to comprehend sign language.
What resulted was a modern take on the brewery that features a bright, crisp white design touched with softwoods, copper tones and a touch of green.
With the bar as a main focal point, GTM's design utilizes a wood slat system that extends to the back wall. Rows of acoustical panels draw attention to the ceiling, emphasizing the dramatic 16-foot height while also providing acoustical treatment throughout the space.
