Melding luxury and sustainability, London agency FormRoom developed the concept and design for Kailo.

Kailo is a loose translation of the Indo-European word for “health.” The studio drew inspiration from the Roman era. The selections of materials reflect both the Roman aesthetic and sustainable ethos via the use of era-specific materials like obsidian and tadelakt (plaster). The ancient materials were combined with recycled stone, marble and altrock surfaces with the aim of using 80% sustainable materials throughout the design, according to the agency.

• A grand central bar and sweeping arched staircase anchor the space, taking design cues from ancient Roman courtyards. Surrounding the bar is a dining area, a co-working space with a deli and, to the rear, a private chef’s table.

• The restrooms reflect the Roman tradition of a continuous porch with a central fountain but are reimagined to provide a luxury experience and an Instagrammable moment for guests.
