Doors, Windows & Walls

The doors and windows of a restaurant are the literal portals through which guests are transported into the experience offered within. For passersby, doors and windows have the power to beckon and create intrigue; to offer an external glimpse into a restaurant’s brand. For arriving guests, they extend the first hand of welcome, transitioning them from their day outside to the respite inside.

For these reasons alone, paying close attention to door and window design is critical to creating a fully integrated, 360-degree branding experience. Whether bold and dramatic or sleek and subtle, door and window design make strong statements.

But as with virtually all aspects of restaurant design, true beauty is more than skin deep. Sure, they need to look great and can be exciting design elements, but doors and windows also play critical functional roles in temperature maintenance, acoustics management and interior lighting. And when extended to include increasingly popular glass enclosures, retractable roofs and glass wall systems that fold in or lift up to create indoor-outdoor dining environments, they can be major contributors to the bottom line by helping to maximize usable space for year-round revenue generation.

To satisfy both form and function requirements when considering door and window structures, designs and materials, be sure to keep a few key questions in mind before making final decisions:

What messages do my entry door and windows send about my brand?

What “snapshot view” do my windows offer to drive-by guests? To pedestrian traffic?

Is the entry door simple to use (e.g., clear as to which way it opens and not too heavy or difficult to operate) thanks to its construction or to the effect of unbalanced air intake inside?

Is the door and overall entrance area suitably designed to welcome guests in bad weather as well as good?

Are windows designed to maximize guest comfort? Great views are terrific, but windows that aren’t properly shaded to provide for both temperature and light control when needed take away from comfort and ambience.

Are you prepared for the impact that features such as retractable roofs, removable glass wall systems and garage doors will have on acoustics? On pest management? On airflow and overall HVAC-related costs?
